1. Scope
1.1 These requirements apply to drive machine controllers, logic controllers, and operating devices accessory thereto, for starting, stopping, regulating, controlling, or protecting electric motors, generators, or other equipment, for elevators, escalators, moving walks, dumbwaiters, and elevating devices for the handicapped (wheelchair and stairway lifts).
1.2 The electrical equipment is intended to be connected to supply circuits at a nominal system voltage of 600 V or less, and for use in nonhazardous locations in accordance with the rules of the applicable electrical codes.
1.3 These requirements exclude any equipment specifications already covered by an applicable elevator or elevating device code.
1.4 The object of this Standard is to reduce the risk of injury to persons and damage to property from fire and electrical shock by presenting requirements for proper design, good construction, and h igh quality workmanship of the equipment listed in Clause 1.
1. To this end, this is a safety standard for the design and construction of equipment to be used in conformity with the rules of the applicable elevator and electrical codes.
1.5 This Standard does not apply to devices that are rated for connection to extra low voltage Class 2 supply circuits as defined in the applicable electrical code. Note: Extra low voltage circuits are circuits that have a voltage of not more than 30 V rms or 42.4 V peak.
1.6 The interpretation of clauses depends on the correct interpretation of the words ""shall"", ""should"", and ""may"". ""Shall"" is mandatory; ""should"" is recommendatory; ""may"" is permissive.
1.7 Metric (SI) units are the primary units of measure in this Standard. The Imperial units in the text have been directly (soft) converted from the SI units.
